Background Reading – Joel 2:28

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:”
My Background Comment
Joel was a prophet of God speaking to Judah, the southern kingdom centered in Jerusalem. The people were living through tremendous devastation. A locust plague had stripped the land, crops had been destroyed, and drought had added to the destruction. Joel called the people to return to the Lord—not simply outwardly, but with their whole hearts.
God then promised restoration. But in Joel 2:28, His promise reaches far beyond restoring crops and land. Centuries before its fulfillment, God revealed through Joel that a time was coming when He would pour out His Spirit. Joel specifically speaks of sons and daughters, old men and young men, and of prophecy, dreams, and visions.
What stands out to me is that God revealed this centuries beforehand. The people hearing Joel could not yet see what God was preparing, but God could. His promise reached beyond their generation and pointed toward what was still to come. That also connects with our study of Daniel, because Daniel was given visions concerning events his generation could not yet see.
Why Joel for This Lesson?
Joel 2:28 is useful background for a lesson about Daniel’s visions because Joel speaks specifically about prophecy, dreams, and visions. The connection is not that Joel is explaining Daniel 8. Rather, Joel establishes the biblical theme of God revealing what human beings cannot yet see. Daniel 8 is a striking example of that: Daniel is shown future kingdoms and events before they unfold in history.
What Is Judah?
Judah can refer to both a person and a place in Scripture. Judah the person was one of Jacob’s twelve sons, and his descendants became the tribe of Judah. After Solomon’s reign, the kingdom divided. The northern kingdom was known as Israel, while the southern kingdom became known as Judah. Jerusalem was the capital and spiritual center of the southern kingdom. So when we say Joel spoke to Judah, we mean the people of the southern kingdom centered around Jerusalem.
Important Timeline Note
Joel’s date is debated among scholars, so it is safer in class to say “centuries before” rather than give an exact number of years. That preserves the important point without claiming a date Scripture itself does not provide.
Tonight’s Main Lesson – Daniel 8
Daniel 8 records Daniel’s vision of a ram, a male goat, and a prominent horn. The vision concerns kingdoms and rulers that would arise after Daniel. The lesson identifies the ram with Medo-Persia and the goat with Greece. The prominent horn is associated with Greece’s first great king, commonly understood as Alexander the Great. After that horn is broken, four arise in its place, corresponding to the division of Alexander’s empire. The later “little horn” is commonly connected historically with Antiochus IV Epiphanes and his persecution and desecration connected with the Jewish people and worship.
Theme to Keep in Mind
The thread joining the background reading to Daniel 8 is God’s ability to reveal what lies beyond human sight. People experience history one day at a time; God is not limited by our view of time. Biblical prophecy should therefore lead us not merely to fascination with predictions, but to reverence, faithfulness, and confidence in God.
