In The Messenger, we entered an imagined room in Roman Asia around A.D. 95. It was not a church with pews, stained glass, and a pulpit. It was someone’s home—a room made ready after the day’s work was done.
Small clay lamps burned olive oil, throwing an uneven amber light across plastered walls. The air carried the faint smells of smoke, wool, bread, and bodies gathered close together. Some sat on stools or low benches. Others settled onto woven mats along the wall. The shutters were drawn against the night, muting the noise from the street beyond.
Among them were laborers and merchants, servants and householders, old believers and those still learning what it meant to follow Christ in a Roman city. They had not gathered casually. A manuscript had arrived—a papyrus roll carried from one congregation to another—and everyone understood that it was meant to be heard aloud.
Conversation fell to a barely audible whisper as the reader took his place near the lamp. He held the papyrus roll with reverence. The words it carried had been given by God to Jesus Christ, sent through His angel, and entrusted to John. Now they had reached this congregation. Mara leaned forward, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. She did not know what the message would contain, but she knew where it had come from. As the reader drew breath to begin, Mara held hers.
Now we read the words of Scripture.
Revelation 1:1–3
1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
“`2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

God gave the Revelation to Jesus Christ to show His servants what must come to pass. Jesus sent and signified it through His angel to John. John bore witness to the word of God, the testimony of Jesus Christ, and all that he saw. A blessing is given to the one who reads the words of this prophecy and to those who hear and keep what is written.
And John tells us:
“For the time is at hand.”
